That reminds me of another funny bit Friday night. Not sure if you’ll remember but we sat down near the NSW Library and your iPod fell off your purse (or maybe you threw it out, I’m not sure).
I was like “heyyy your iPod” and you were like “SO WHAAAAT, IT’S JUST AN IPOOOD!”, and I’m like “yeah right”, picked it up and put it in my pocket – as you kept protesting (“NO! IT’S JUST AN IPOD!”).
Then the funny part: you noticed your red OINTMENT TUBE or whatever had fallen as well and you jumped at it, going like “OH, MY OINTMENT!”.

Uma coisa que eu admiro no povo australiano é a cara de pau o senso de humor pra inventar diversas desculpas pra se divertir. Desculpas que PEGAM, se firmam, viram TRADIÇÃO.

Cricket é uma desculpa pra ficar bebendo por cinco dias seguidos: FATO. Melbourne Cup é uma desculpa pra se vestir chique, matar pelo menos meio dia de trabalho por imposição da população e apostar em cavalos como se jogo não contasse como um vício (imagina um dia em que todo mundo para pra FUMAR, hshgh). E agora temos o MOVEMBER, a desculpa que faltava pros homens de bem deixarem um bigodão por pelo menos um mês, sem sofrer (maiores) represálias sociais e quiçá até recebendo EMANAÇÕES de admiração de quem porventura achar que tu estás de fato angariando doações pra causa que está por trás.

A saber, a causa que está por trás é elevar a conscientização sobre problemas de saúde masculinos, sobretudo o câncer de próstata. O sutil gancho liga a figura do machão de bigode à noção machista de guardar os probleminhas pra si até virarem problemões – que é o comportamento que se quer combater. Quem participa DE VERDADE se registra no site e aceita doações (PATROCÍNIO do bigode) que são repassadas pra certas instituições relacionadas. Mas a maioria tá nessa só pelo arreganho mesmo. Digo, pela “conscientização”.

Segundo o site, a ideia surgiu em Melbourne em 2003, e desde então se espalhou pelo mundo todo – ou melhor, por vários países de língua inglesa, que são os que podem tirar proveito do trocadilho* do nome – arrecadando ALTAS GRANAS no processo.

Sucesso total.

Quanto a mim, agora que eu lavei o rosto e vi no espelho ISTO, tive a certeza de que poderia ir até a academia e erguer 300 quilos no supino. Ou enterrar na cara do Anderson Varejão. SEMEAR SETE VIRGENS AO SOM DE SOUL COM WAH-WAH. Caçar um RATO e comer CRU. Construir uma IGREJA. Fazer um solo de bateria de doze minutos.

Até agora só tentei o último.

(*) Ainda junta-se outra mania australiana: a de reduzir todas as palavras possíveis, de uma forma de dar inveja ao gaúcho que usa BERMA pra andar de BICI indo pra REDENÇA tomar um CHIMAS. “Mo” é como eles abreviam “moustache”.

Botei no Picasa todas as fotos que bati ontem no Sculpture By The Sea, excelente exposição de arte anual que é instalada entre as praias de Bondi e Bronte. Vale a pena dar uma olhada, tem coisa boa.

Como comentei na matéria da Mirella, uma das coisas que eu acho sensacionais aqui é a transparência da administração pública. Então, quando apareceu esse panfleto no correio de casa, eu achei que seria interessante conferir como isso funcionaria. Tratava-se de um fórum comunitário pra informar os habitantes da minha região sobre o que está sendo feito e o que está pra acontecer (nos aspectos mais diversos), e ouvir comentários da população. Aconteceu nessa segunda-feira, e eu fui.

Talvez seja bom antes explicar esse conceito de community. A divisão territorial/administrativa é diferente aqui. Existe a prefeita Clover Moore, que gerencia a City of Sydney – algo que só engloba os bairros mais centrais, numa distância de alguns poucos quilômetros por volta do CBD, ou “distrito central de negócios”, que fica no norte dessa demarcação. Nem sei como se centraliza o governo de todos os outros bairros da Grande Sydney (note que nesse mapa o CBD é apenas do tamanho daquele ponto vermelho mesmo).

Aí, no que diz respeito aos “planos de ação local” (LAPs), esses bairros da city são agrupados em regiões, cada uma com seu conselho que responde à prefeitura. A minha região, ou community, é chamada City East e engloba Darlinghurst (bairro onde moro), East Sydney (onde trabalho, embora sejam apenas 4 quadras de distância), mais Potts Point, Kings Cross, Woolloomooloo, Rushcutters Bay e Elizabeth Bay. Então foram somente essas as áreas abordadas nessa reunião.

Já achei trimassa que eles ofereciam uma van pegando um pessoal na rua atrás de onde eu trabalho, pra levar pro local do fórum, que seria a umas quinze quadras dali. Como os mais velhos curtem muito essas oportunidades de esbravejar sem ser com uma nuvem, essa mordomia vem a calhar. E eu aproveitei, por que não?

A van chegou lá com não mais que oito pessoas, entre as quais eu era o único abaixo dos 50 anos. Entramos no local, e a primeira fase do encontro, das 18:00 às 18:45, seria destinado à vazão de quaisquer insatisfações ou à busca de esclarecimentos entre população e representantes de todos departamentos administrativos possíveis. Eu achava que isso se daria em forma de plateia pedindo a palavra, mas não. Os representantes se dispunham em mesas contornando a sala, e o pessoal sentava na frente pro TÊTE-À-TÊTE mesmo, como numa exposição ou CONSELHO DE CLASSE (ref. Pastor Dohms). Esse formato certamente reduz a parcela de MIMIMI que sobra pra depois.

Enquanto isso, numa sala adjacente, foram servidos deliciosos quitutes e acepipes, com chá, café, água e suco também. Eu que não estava ali pra falar com ninguém, mas apenas para observar, mandei ver num sanduíche e um WRAP, lavando com um suquinho de laranja esperto. Fiquei lendo um livreto excelente explicando o LAP da região.

Terminado esse período, começaram as apresentações em si. As cadeiras foram espalhadas e a plateia, que havia crescido aos poucos desde o início da função, se sentou em frente ao púlpito e telão. Calculo uns cem, cento e poucos presentes. Não sei como acertaram tanto no tamanho da sala.

A prefeita tomou a palavra, fez breve introdução e falou sobre o andamento das medidas estabelecidas pelo plano de sustentabilidade Sydney 2030. Não demorou muito, e passou a bola pra uma outra representante – uma oradora muito boa, por sinal – que foi logo abordando as questões mais críticas que a maioria dos presentes queria ouvir.

Seriam os problemas relacionados a Kings Cross, que é o inferninho de Sydney, com dúzias e dúzias de boates, bares, pubs, puteiros, strip clubs e tudo mais. Todo final de semana é um atrolho BÁRBARO durante as noites, e pra quem ousa MORAR ali isso gera vários problemas difíceis de consertar. Acreditem se quiserem, poluição sonora dos estabelecimentos em si NÃO é um. Veículos barulhentos – ou por som alto ou por alterações ilegais – eram a maior reclamação. Estão agora experimentando fechar o acesso a certas ruas secundárias. Outros estresses vêm do consumo excessivo de álcool; gente fora da casinha berrando, fazendo sujeira ou brigando. Entrou em vigor um congelamento de um ano na concessão de novas licenças pra vender álcool na área, pra dar uma aliviada. E o outro grande problema é a EVACUAÇÃO dessa galera no fim da noite. Botaram um ponto de táxi mais bombado ali no meio pra ver se melhora. Também há ônibus extra tentando ajudar o pessoal mucho loco a ir pra casa mais rápido.

Mas enfim, nem era meu objetivo entrar nesses detalhes. Depois dessa moça falou um comissário de polícia responsável por essas medidas na área. Depois desses dois discursos, foi aberto espaço pras perguntas, e foi quando foram feitos vááários comentários e sugestões. Nada de muito barraco, mas tomou um certo tempo e forçou os próximos “palestrantes” a se apressarem.

Aí veio um cara apresentar sobre as melhorias recentes na região e o que está planejado. Muito massa essa parte, mostrando nos slides as várias obras prontas lindonas, ou pequenas intervenções de mobiliário urbano, e as previsões (“impressões artísticas”) do que tá pra rolar.

O próximo foi um sujeito responsável pelas ciclovias que estão sendo desenroladas por toda a city. Ele explicou e mostrou como elas vão ser e o que está em construção no momento (vai ter uma na minha rua cruzando a city retão de sul a norte que até me deixou pensando em bicicletas).

Finalmente, outro senhor conclui falando sobre DAs, ou development applications, que é quando alguém dá entrada querendo mudar estruturas significativas ou a proposta de algum lugar, de forma que a rapeize que mora perto tem que ficar sabendo e não discordar. Mostrou algumas alterações completas e os projetos de algumas no futuro próximo, com algumas informações bem diretas sobre o desenrolar de cada processo.

Eu ficava boquiaberto com a eficácia de cada apresentação. Mesmo assim, acabou passando um pouco da hora prevista pra terminar o encontro, pela participação dos habitantes. Mas eu fiquei até o fim com todo o prazer, tri emocionado com as perspectivas apresentadas. A impressão que fica é que política, aqui, é uma coisa mil vezes mais simples do que no Brasil. É mais fácil que jogar SIM CITY. A galera paga os impostos, tu pergunta pra eles “QUI TU QUÉ”, eles te dizem, tu vai lá e FAZ, depois MOSTRA, aí pergunta “TÁ BOM ASSIM?”, e depois “ok, e agora?”. Sifuder.

Como anunciado, o show da quinta passada foi uma reedição da visita de Kris Roe em abril passado. Desta vez com a banda completa, seriam tocados os clássicos de outrora, que angariaram tantos fãs em torno da virada do milênio.

Na foto do poster – uma das últimas adições à parede do meu quarto, aliás – eram quatro membros na atual formação dos Ataris. Porém, no palco do The Gaelic surgiu um trio, sem satisfações a respeito. Kris Roe ativava gravações via pedaleira em músicas em que a outra guitarra faria falta, ou pra outros efeitos sonoros, como o pianinho no começo de “IOU One Galaxy”. No baixo, um bom barbudo.

Kris Roe continua sendo o pior roqueiro. Desengonçado, feio e tímido. E canhoto. Mas a gente gosta dele. Mesmo quando ele decide pular na galera no momento mais aleatório e muito de repente, e acaba dando uma bundada bem na na minha cara. Foi mais constrangedor pra ele do que pra mim, porque a plateia ao meu redor prontamente o jogou de volta pro palco, como levantadores de vôlei. O efeito visual foi basicamente como se ele tivesse usado a minha cara como uma cama elástica inclinada em 45 graus. Not particularly cool.

Setlist incluiu: Unopened Letter To The World, So Long Astoria, Summer Wind Was Always Our Song, In This Diary, Boys Of Summer, uma música nova (nada má), 1*15*96, IOU One Galaxy, Takeoffs And Landings, The Hero Dies In This One, San Dimas.

Kris voltou sozinho do breve bis pra tocar “Ben Lee”, que é sobre o ódio a um músico australiano de tal nome, nem tão conhecido assim. Ele diz que detesta a música, mas sempre toca aqui – embora eu diria que a plateia nem parece fazer questão. Ele esqueceu a letra e não sabia como começar, então eu dei uma forcinha:

Como sempre, tinha algumas outras que eu queria ter ouvido, mas seria pedir demais.

Fui botar uns tênis pra lavar na máquina, como já tinha feito outras vezes. Tinha seis pares bem sujos; decidi ser prudente (ahã) e botar os três brancos/cinzas antes, e os três coloridos/pretos depois. Isso porque lembrei que meu Adidas vermelho tinha manchado detalhes brancos em outros tênis outra vez. Achei que aquilo só tinha acontecido porque era primeira vez, mas enfim.

Não lembrava o ajuste indicado da máquina, chutei uma água quente (90 graus) pros brancos, e não houve problema. Na hora dos coloridos, fiquei meio CABREIRO e baixei pra 60.

Faltando ainda uma hora pro fim do ciclo, dei uma espiada pra dentro da portinhola. Vi de relance uma SOLA perdida e previ o caos. Esperei a próxima CENTRIFUGAGEM acabar e cancelo o processo.

O supracitado Adidas vermelho, de modelo GAZELLE, que eu tinha herdado (ou roubado) do meu irmão há muitos anos, encontrava-se completamente DEBULHADO da seguinte forma:

Impressionante. Até lembrei dos Mamonas Assassinas. Mas por esse tênis eu até que não me senti tão mal, porque cumpriu seu papel por muito tempo, e o calcanhar já tava CARCUMIDO a um nível que tava ficando difícil de disfarçar. O problema, pensei eu, seria o destino dos outros dois pares, bem mais novos (acho que nenhum tinha mais de um ano).

Um deles era um verde. Já fui pensando “hm, verde com vermelho dá o quê mesmo? Marrom?”. Na mosca:

Que merda. Esse era bastante novo, e ainda paguei 80 dólares, o que não é barato.

Restava o Puma, o fiel, versátil e confortável Puma preto que comprei em promoção por 56 pilas, se não me engano, e que eu vinha usando muito. Felizmente esse parece não ter sofrido tanto, apesar do tom levemente rosado que os cadarços ganharam:

I’ve decided to write this post because I couldn’t find any clear information about the Mensa supervised test before taking it. I don’t know if it’s a confidentiality thing, but if it is, they certainly forgot to mention it to me, so my conscience is clear! Hopefully I’ll be satiating someone else’s curiosity next time they look this up on Google. The unimaginative post title reflects that purpose. :]

All the basic information about how to join Mensa can be found on their websites. This is the Australian one. I’ll talk about what’s not there.

Disclaimer: I took Mensa’s supervised test in the session held by the Australian Mensa in late August 2009, in Surry Hills, Sydney, NSW. Everything I’ll write here refers only to that particular test on that particular day; I cannot guarantee that the format is the same or even similar in any other Mensa “branch” – or even in other sessions held at that same location, for that matter.

I should also say it’s now been a month and a half since I took the test and I don’t know if I’ll remember everything perfectly. I would’ve taken notes if I knew I’d do this, heh. But I’ll try, and I’m sure I’ll get the main aspects right.

Not rocket science

If you generally like IQ tests and all that sort of brain tease, the Mensa test should be kind of fun and you shouldn’t be afraid to try it. I’m not saying that joining Mensa is necessarily worthwhile (and I won’t get into that at all here), but if you want to, don’t worry about the test being too hard. It’s very straight-forward, and I find it really cool how these tests manage to assess your “thinking skills” without going anywhere near your actual knowledge. I mean, you don’t even need basic maths to do well in the Mensa test. Trust me. It’s all about identifying patterns, organising things in your head as you think and being able to deduce and infer logically.

Plus, you know, it’s all very discreet. If you think you’d be embarrassed if you tried and failed, then just don’t tell anyone about it! I’d say the chances of bumping into someone you know at the testing session are usually rather slim.

How it works

The most important thing to tell you about the supervised Mensa test is they actually have two independent tests: the one I’d call a “written” test, and the so-called “culture-fair” test – both being subdivided in parts, as we’ll see later. To do the written test you need to understand English, and it’s heavily dependent on a good grasp of the vocabulary. Hence – especially in a country as culturally-diverse as Australia – it’s very handy that you also have the culture-fair option: that one has nothing but sequences of drawings. Details later.

You only need to score above the 98% percentile in one of the tests to be invited to join Mensa. The marks are not averaged out at all, so you can do only one of them if you wish… But doing both will only increase your chances (and cost the same A$60 fee), so why not?

If you do get the score you need in either of the tests, all the acceptance letter will tell you is: “at least one of your two test scores reached or exceeded the required 98% percentile level”. It won’t tell you which one, or if you passed on both; it won’t have your answers or the correct ones; it won’t say how many answers you got right; and it won’t give you an IQ score. You passed, and that’s it. It’s a pretty standard letter.

The whole session takes 2 hours. The first hour and a half or so are dedicated to the written test. There’s a short break, and then the culture-fair test takes 20 minutes.

In both tests, you have the question sheet, which mustn’t be written on, and the answer sheet, where you mark your answers. It’s all multiple choice, so you will only be filling out circles.

There’s no penalty for getting answers wrong in comparison to leaving them blank, so if time’s about to run out (they warn you) and you haven’t completed a section, guess away. It would be silly not to. It’ll frustrate you because you’ll know that if you had just a bit more time you could work everything out with no problems… But that’s how the thing’s designed. In fact, I should emphasise this: in a Mensa test, it’s the time limit that will be your greatest obstacle.

One thing I did read online just before doing the test was that you weren’t allowed to sketch things down at all to help your thought process. Well, at least in my case, this didn’t turn out to be true: they provided a small sheet of paper for us to use. But it’s really only useful for the “problems” section of the written test. You’ll see why.

The written test

The written test is divided in 6 parts, if I’m not mistaken. Depending on the section, they will give you between 8 and 12 minutes to complete each. Maybe up to 20. The proctor will introduce and explain each section and then time it. You cannot turn the page to go to the next section before the time is up (if you’re too quick), nor can you use your pencil after they say the time is up (if you’re too slow).

I’ll now finally tell you what type of questions you have on each section of the written test. That’s what I most wanted to find out before I did it.

The sections aren’t actually called this way, and I don’t know that this is the right order. Also, I’m making these examples up, just to illustrate the format. They are not taken from the actual test and they might not be all that great.

Section 1 – Synonyms. All answers are somewhat related, but only one will always be an ideal synonym. Example:

Pick the word that best defines BRAVE:
a) Strong
b) Ruthless
c) Courageous
d) Invincible
e) Careless

Section 2 – Antonyms. Same as above, but opposite, if you know what I mean. Example:

PRODUCING is the opposite of:
a) Smashing
b) Consuming
c) Collecting
d) Destroying
e) Discarding

Section 3 – The odd one out. In each group of answers there’s 4 words that share a connection, something in common, and a 5^th which doesn’t. Example:

Pick the word that doesn’t belong to the group:
a) Tree
b) Farm
c) River
d) Flower
e) Mountain

Section 4 – Analogies. A is to B as X is to Y. Example:

COUNTRY is to CITY as HOUSE is to:
a) Room
b) Street
c) Neighbourhood
d) Yard
e) Door

Note: each of the 4 sections above will have either 20 or 25 questions in each, with different levels of difficulty. You have to be fast.

Section 5 – Logical sentences. In this section you have to pick the missing words that would form the sentence which would make the most sense. I think there were only three sentences to complete when I did it, but it takes some thinking because of all the different possibilities that don’t sound so bad. See if you get what I mean below. It’s a bit annoying to whip out a proper example, but let’s try:

Many people have an irrational fear of (1), not because they’ve witnessed any (2) behavior on their part, but because they associate these (3) with a (4) feeling of (5).

The options aren’t put exactly in that layout, but it’s the same outcome.

Section 6 – Problems. This is the bit they give you more time for. It’s where you’ll get things like “what’s the next number in this sequence?”, or “if all the X are Z and some of the Z are Y, then are all X definitely Y?”, or messing around with the age gap between Tom and Jane, or the hands of a clock, or figuring out made-up languages/currencies, etc. Some examples are the written stuff in tests such as the Mensa Workout (not the graphical stuff, because that goes into the culture-fair test).  No questions involving anagrams, though, when I did it. Like I mentioned, this is the only time the sheet of paper might be useful.

The culture-fair test

After a short break, it’s time for the graphic test. There’s not a lot to tell you about these drawings. Usually you’re just supposed to look at them and understand what’s happening from one image to the next (i.e., what’s the pattern that explains the change), and thus understand what would happen from the last to the one that’s missing.  Random example I found:

Then in some sections, you’d have to pick two images: the pair that have something in common. And in others, you’d pick the only one that differed. Much like you’d do with words in parts of the written test, in case you haven’t noticed.

This test is also broken down into a few sections. But since you don’t have to read anything here but only perceive, each of these sections is lightning-fast. Prefer to skip than to overthink, and remember to try and guess, if you must, in the final seconds.

When that’s done, you hand in the papers and they tell you you’ll be notified of the results by snail mail within 6 weeks. And that’s it.

Don’t worry too much

In quite a few sections, I didn’t find time to finish everything, or even take a guess. Like I said before, the time limit causes more frustration than any of the questions – or at least that was my experience. But hey, I ended up passing anyways, so you shouldn’t lose confidence if time runs out for you here and there.

At the beginning of my session, which had about 15 people (all dudes, just for the record), one of the proctors read an introduction that stated that 75% of all people who take the supervised test are accepted. I don’t know how accurate or up-to-date that statement is – and I also don’t know whether it referred just to that location, or to Australia, or to the international organisation as a whole – but I found that figure to be quite high. That should also motivate you.
